Lawmakers, advocates, doctors and nurses gathered in Brooklyn Thursday night to throw their support behind Long Island College Hospital.

The SUNY Board of Trustees unanimously voted last week to close the facility, but attendees of a town hall meeting in Cobble Hill called on Governor Andrew Cuomo and the Health Department to step in.

"LICH is at 90 percent or more capacity. Almost every bed, in fact, many nights, more than the number of beds that LICH is staffed for, is full right now," said Brooklyn State Senator Daniel Squadron. "Is that a failing hospital? A hospital we don't need?"

"You know that LICH is one of Brooklyn's largest employers, with over 2,000 employees, and many of them are sitting in this room right here tonight with us," said Brooklyn Assemblyman Joan Millman. "Closing the hospital would be a major loss to our local economy."

SUNY Downstate, which runs the facility, said the hospital has a $40 million budget shortfall and would have run out of money by next month.
