A local lawmaker is calling for a ban of what he calls a deadly workout supplement.
State Senator Jeff Klein is introducing legislation that would bar stores in New York from selling products containing dimethylamylamine, or DMAA.
Klein says stores such as GNC and Vitamin Shoppe continue to sell it, despite reports of a U.S. serviceman dying and an Federal Drug Administration warning that it causes heart and nervous system damage.
Klein's office provided undercover video he said shows employees at the stores failing to warn customers of the products potential risks.
"Every sports organization, including the Olympics Committee, have already banned it," Klein said. "It's a sign that this is a product that should be banned in our state and hopefully, eventually, nationally."
"These drugs are dangerous," said Brent Nowicki, a former sports agent. "They should not be on the shelves. They should not be available to student athletes. or professional athletes. It's wrong, and it needs to stop."
GNC says it doesn't make any products containing DMAA, and any products containing it are widely available in other stores and online.
GNC adds that a year long study has yet to yield scientific proof of any health risks.
