The Food and Drug Administration approved the first drug shown to reduce the risk of HIV infection Monday, a milestone in the fight against HIV and AIDS.
The drug Truvada can now be used as a preventative measure for people at a high risk of acquiring the virus, such as those who have sex with HIV-positive partners.
A three-year study found that daily doses of the pill cut the risk of infection in healthy gay and bisexual men by more than 40 percent when accompanied by condoms and counseling.
The once-a-day pill is already used to treat those with the virus.
Experts say more than 50,000 Americans are infected with HIV every year.
