A new workout class at Equinox fitness clubs uses a bit of visual stimulation to motivate people in the gym. NY1's Health reporter Kafi Drexel filed the following report. Even for the toughest of the fitness-inclined, getting through workouts can sometimes be a drag. But music videos featuring Beyonce and Lady Gaga could help fire up people's brains to get them to push through.
That is part of the concept behind Michael MacNeal's "Monster Cycle" out of Equinox fitness clubs.
"I was taking classes and I thought 'What is the next level? Where can we take this experience?' So I created this full mind/body experience where it combines positive affirmations, visual elements, you know, sexy music videos. Not staying quiet, not saying silenced, being loud in class. Interacting with the people in the room," says instructor Michael MacNeal. "We sit in these rooms for 45 minutes in the dark and I like to have fun with it. So it is almost like a rock concert at a night club and you kind of forget you're working out. You lose yourself in the visuals, you lose yourself interacting with the people around you."
The video project class sometimes incorporates actual maps of a ride, or charts which can serve as reminders of how much energy one should be putting into the workout.
MacNeal says it is the visual cues that often make people work harder in a workout.
"Especially here in New York, I've had people specifically tell me that New York is very visual," says MacNeal. "So we need to see those charts written down in terms of what our cadence is going to be, what our RPMs are going to be. They want to see those sexy artist bodies to inspire them to work out a little harder and they want to be loud and they want to let out some frustration and get something off of their chest."
If will.i.am, J-Lo and Mick Jagger were telling you that "you can go hard or go home," you just might pedal a little faster too.
