The city Department of Health wants to help so-called “light smokers” quit.
For the first time ever, health officials are targeting light smokers about the health consequences with a new campaign called "One Cigarette is One Too Many."
Light smoking is defined as fewer than 10 cigarettes per day.
Along with a 30-second TV ad that will run through January 15, the health department will hold a three-week nicotine gum giveaway.
According to the health department, adults who smoke even one to four cigarettes per day have nearly three times the risk for heart disease versus a non-smoker.
Research also points to a four to six-year average loss of life for women who are light smokers versus those who aren't.
