A lot of men are bulky on top but are challenged when it comes to shaping and toning the legs, but one city gym is devoted to helping them out. NY1's Health reporter Kafi Drexel filed the following report. The ballet barre workout method has become a big hit among the ladies and it is now doing the same thing for men. At Physique 57, a new "men only" class aims to shape and tone a part of the body men often ignore.
"The lower half is pretty much neglected by a lot of guys, so we really target your thighs," says instructor James Crescent. "We get the outer, inner, we get the tops of them. It goes down to the calves."
Weight-bearing exercises get muscles working in overdrive. For an even more intense inner thigh workout, some of the men place a little playground ball between their thighs.
"Your legs are trembling and there's always ways to do new positions and challenge yourself even more," says participant Scott Minerich. "Once you kind of think you're at the peak, there's always something else you can do."
When it comes to working on the lower half of the body, men can be tempted to use a lot of weight to build tone and muscle. Yet instructors say using one's own body weight can take things to another level.
"You really reduce your risk of injury because you're not sitting under a rack of weights and you have to be at your center and have to have your core engaged," says Cresent. "Also, you improve your posture. You don't do things like that at the gym. Usually, you work improperly, because you don't have that solid base to start from. Here, we really work from the core out."
In the end, Physique's workout isn't just about the legs.
"My wife got tired of hearing me bellyache about the belly I gained when we had our first child. And it's still here and she's seven months old," says participant Timur Kocak. "So I'm here to lose it."
