It had been heavily rumored, but NBC formally announced today that Jimmy Fallon will take Conan O'Brien's late-night spot.

The "Saturday Night Live" alum will take over for O'Brien once O'Brien moves out west to replace Jay Leno on the "Tonight Show."

The transition is expected to take place in June of 2009.

The only wrinkle in the plan could come if Leno decides he's not quite ready to leave his post. Leno agreed to the 2009 transition date several years ago, but people close to him have said he is not eager to leave the job.

NBC is trying to find another role for him so he doesn't leave for a competing network.
