A family friend says stage and screen veteran Ben Gazzara died Saturday in Manhattan at age 81, after being placed in hospice care for cancer.
Gazzara, who was born and grew up on the Lower East Side, appeared in the original Broadway production of "Cat On A Hot Tin Roof," before moving on to movies like the Oscar-nominated "Anatomy Of A Murder."
In later years, Gazzara became familiar to a new generation when he appeared in the cult classic "The Big Lebowski."
His last Broadway appearance was in "Awake and Sing" in 2006.
