A new Department of Labor campaign is attempting to help young workers looking for holiday employment. NY1's Asa Aarons filed the following report.
Each year thousands of businesses add on personnel to help them deal with the holiday rush. For some workers, it's a little extra holiday cash; for others, survival money.
The New York State Department of Labor is attempting to deal with both through their new online initiative, Dream it, Plan it, Make it Happen.
Part of it is aimed at ages 14-17. The other section is for young adults 18-24. Whichever age group you fall in to, representatives with the Department of Labor say the time to start looking for holiday employment is now.
“Next month is the month that retailers will start hiring people,” says John Moye of the NYS DOL. “We know that by November, they’re really going to be wrapping up. And by December, they’re going to be at their peak.”
One section of the site deals with the basics.
“This will help you in terms of what to wear to an interview, what questions to ask,” explains Moye.
The comprehensive site even has a video instruction on how to tie a necktie.
The other section deals with the legal issues new workers will encounter.
“Well, they need to know what their rights are,” Moye says. “How many hours can they work? What’s the hourly rate/wage currently right now?”
People hoping to apply for these jobs now should realize the idea of beating the pavement has given way to pounding the keys. Many of the major employers have websites set up for you to starting making online applications right away.
