In a season that already sparkles by day with trendy metallics and tons of shine, it can be hard to go day into night with overdoing it this holiday season. Stylist George Brescia says to reign it in at work.
"For a woman, she goes and she wears a great top a jacket and pants, and then, for the holiday party, all she has to do is change her makeup, right?" Brescia says. "Maybe we make the eye a little smokier, we make the lip a little darker, we get a more statement earring going on, we take the jacket off and you're ready to go."
NY1 caught up Brescia helping a friend, actor Alison Mahoney, do some holiday party shopping at Darling in the West Village. where designer looks run about $100 to $150.
"I'm actually going to a bunch of holiday parties this weekend, and I was looking for something new and flirty and kind of sexy," Mahoney says.
Brescia says to try everything on because it only matter how it looks on you. And don't do the holiday sweater unless you can do it right.
"Take a Christmas sweater and wear it with a pair of leggings and a cool down vest and a riding boot," Brescia says. "That really chics it up."
For New Year's Eve, Brescia says there are plenty of ways to create an added sense of style without going head to toe sequins. And do stick with colors and silhouettes you already know look good on you.
"If you have great legs, wear something short, a black tight and a nice heel," he says. "And then pick a statement that you want to make. You can use an earring, you can use a big necklace, you can use a fabulous cuff."
Instead of overdressing, Brescia suggests getting your hair or makeup done professionally.
Another New Year's Eve don't: Don't limit yourself to sequins and sparkles. Brescia says lace is another great way to look super dressed up and very now.
And save money by finding an outfit that just doesn't need much to dress it up. In this case, a pair of sparkling earrings and black heels complete the look.
