New York Film Festival 2012: Disney Classic Celebrates 75 Years Of Charming Audiences

A special 75th anniversary screening of Snow White recently took place as part of this year's New York Film Festival. NY1's Stephanie Simon filed the following report.

Disney celebrated the 75th anniversary of "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" with a special screening at The Walter Reade Theater. But beyond the wicked stepmother and poisonous apple, it was Disney Animator and Director Eric Goldberg who really shocked the crowd by explaining how the first full length animated feature was once ridiculed.

"They called it Disney's follie. All the pundits in Hollywood thought no way would a feature animated film would actually fly with audiences. They said, 'All that color it's gonna hurt your eyes,'" Goldberg said.

But when it was released it was an instant and phenomenal success spurring the thriving industry that continues today. Goldberg says the lighting and camera work was groundbreaking but also it's a story of big and small heroes that enchants adults and kids alike with the power of love, the joy of song and seven funny dwarfs.

And of course there was the obvious but important question to be asked, like who is your favorite dwarf?

"Dopey," said one young movie goer.

"Dopey because he's funny," said another.

"Probably Doc actually. I love Dopey, Dopey's really funny but I love the animation on Doc because he's trying to be officious but he always trips over his words," Goldberg said.

It seems there's a little bit of each of the film's characters in all of us. And that's why Snow White remains one of the fairest of them all.
