A one-woman show about dating in the big city has audience members coming back for more. NY1's Frank DiLella filed the following report.Performer Roslyn Hart plays Michelle Hoffman, or "Shells," a 34-year-old senior analyst at JP Morgan Chase by day, and self-proclaimed cabaret artist by night. Hart has performed the part monthly for more than three years at Joe’s Pub at the Public Theater. Though it’s a one woman show, a failed relationship plays a big part.
"Shells is basically you on your worst day. Or your best friend who can’t get over it. Or the person that you don’t want to be but can’t help being," says Hart. "She’s also obsessed with this guy she had one date with three years ago. So every show is one, an attempt to become a star, and two, an attempt to get him back."
Hart’s writing partner, Nick Chase, says the show’s performances are episodic. Audience members often return to hear about what’s new with Shells, and to offer up relationship advice.
“It’s definitely a conversation. People speak back to her and tell her what to do, and she argues with them and tries to justify calling this guy," says Chase.
And though Hart is the only performer on stage, there is another protagonist: the cheap red wine that sits next to Shells, which she steadily consumes. Hart encourages lovers of comedy to come see the performance.
"Come watch a Carrie Bradshaw wannabe ruin her life, one drunk dial at a time. And help her with it," says Hart.
The next performance of Shells is on April 28th at Joe’s Pub.
