You can still live the high life just a stone's throw from the city in Tarrytown, N.Y. NY1's Travel reporter Valarie D'Elia filed the following report. Living like the Rockefellers is practically a pipe dream in this economy, but you can get a taste of the high life at Kykuit in Tarrytown, N.Y.
Overlooking the Hudson Valley, Kykuit is the 40-room estate that once was the palatial home to four generations of Rockefellers, and is now a national trust site that allows visitors to take a fascinating peek into one of the nation's wealthiest families.
Only a half-hour from Manhattan by car or train, Kykuit can be an easy "daycation."
It can also be a quick overnight, with a stay at the nearby Tarrytown House Estate, which is celebrating its 45th year as the nation's very first conference center. On its grounds are a collection of 19th-century mansions such as the Biddle House, the stone castle of heiress Mary Duke Biddle, and King House, a Georgian-style mansion dating back to the 1840s. In the basement of the Biddle house is the restaurant Cellar 49.
The Tarrytown House, managed by Destination Hotels and Resorts, has been modernized with a fitness club and swimming pool.
