AeroSpace Gym in Manhattan's West Village recently held a Focus Mitt Boxing Championship to benefit The East Harlem School.

Superstar Hugh Jackman, who stars in the mega-hit movie "X-Men Origins: Wolverine," volunteered to be a celebrity judge.

Jackman: I'm supporting a great school in East Harlem. The owners are my friends and also I'm going to come here and train a little bit, so I just want to come and check it out, see what my competition is like. But it's great, great atmosphere. This is the essence of New York. Something like this tonight. It's a great cause and people making the most of it, you know.

George Whipple: Why a New York charity? I mean, anyone in the world would want you. This is a very local New York thing. Why did you decide to support this?

Jackman: I've got a home here too, man. New York is my town as well. It feels that way. Obviously, Australia is my home, but here I've got an apartment and we'll be spending a lot of time here, so you know, it's important for us. I think everyone, New Yorkers do that by nature, New Yorkers that I've met. It's all about community for them. I have always been inspired by that, so this is my little bit.

Michael Olagatale, a co-owner and founder of the gym, was the middleweight boxing champion.

"Well, this is to benefit for The East Harlem School. We wanted the benefit because there are kids that need opportunities in this world," he said. "[East Harlem School co-founder] Ivan [Hageman] has done an amazing job in providing for these kids and we're just adding a little bit of what we can. You know that old saying, 'It takes a village.' That's what we're trying to be, a part of that village. Ivan has done a great job with this Harlem school, we're just trying to get that good energy."

Olagatale helped out the focus mitt boxing contest as a trainer

"In the focus mitt boxing championships, the trainer holds the mitts and puts the fighter through the drills and the drills are amazingly coordinated," said Olagatale. "It takes a lot of timing and familiarity between the trainer and the fighter, and that's how they bond. So when you see a fighter in the middle of a fight and it gets hard, the trainer tells them, 'Listen, slip and hook to the body.' Well, they practice it for millions of times on the mitts. That's what it's all about, giving them the real."

For those who did not want to fight with their fists, there was also a speed jump-rope competition.
