City Island is a Bronx neighborhood that is often used as a stand-in for other locations. Incredibly, it has never played itself on film until the premiere of a Tribeca Film Festival entry, appropriately titled "City Island."
Andy Garcia plays a correction officer who heads a family that has many secrets.
George Whipple: City Island, who knew?
Garcia: No, nobody knew. People from the Bronx knew always, but people from Manhattan, I would say 50 percent of the people - if they know where it is, they never been there.
Whipple: I'm thinking of going there for dinner tonight.
Garcia: If you like lobster and shrimp, that's the place to go.
Dominik García-Lorido, Andy Garcia's real-life daughter, also plays his daughter in the film and bravely faced the acting challenge.
"When I would have to do a scene yelling at him, or saying things that might be difficult to say, I just got to let it be difficult. And it is my dad and it's great to have those real feelings," says García-Lorido.
Julianna Margulies plays the mother with a wandering eye.
Margulies: I grew up here my whole life and I didn't know about City Island.
Whipple: Where is City Island?
Margulies: It's in the Bronx. It's a beautiful little fishermen's village, one road and its beautiful beaches. And I can't believe all these years people have been fighting to get out to the Hamptons, when it's 30 minutes uptown.
Raymond De Felitta wrote and directed "City Island."
"City Island has never been filmed as City Island. They always shoot films there and pretend you're in New England, Connecticut, Long Island," says De Felitta. "I went to see this place, I was totally charmed by and was like this is a one-of-a-kind Manhattan community, New York community."
Before "City Island" is released, rush to the Bronx and buy real estate. I'm sure it's going to go through the roof when this film is in theaters.
