Due to the struggling economy, traveling to the end of the earth isn't quite as daunting as it might seem. NY1's Valarie D'Elia filed the following report. The recession has hit the travel industry so hard that we are seeing deals on trips that have been traditionally out of reach for the average traveler. But now, the most remote destination is possibly on the radar, thanks to a 25 percent off sale on an expedition cruise to Antarctica, the southernmost continent.
Hurtigruten is one of 50 cruise lines with ships carrying under 400 passengers that makes the journey between the tip of Argentina and Antarctica. Hurtigruten's M S Fram offers one of the shortest itineraries in the region combining an eight day cruise departing from Ushuaia, the southernmost city in the world with two days on either side spent in Buenos Aires. Including travel time from New York, it's a 13-day experience.
Passengers onboard the steel-hulled Fram, either enjoy or endure 36 stomach churning hours crossing the rocky Drake passage before reaching the islands surrounding the Antarctic Peninsula. A total of three and a half days is actually spent setting foot on terra firma, before you have to brace yourself for the return trip through the Drake.
What makes this deal so enticing is that instead of minuscule cabins you bunk in roomy suites and have all your wine, beer and soda included at meal times along with an en-suite bottle of champagne from the captain. Passengers also receive two optional excursions in Buenos Aires.
The 25 percent off sale has been extended until July 31st with rates starting at $6,577 per person, a savings of between $3,000 to $5,000 on regular rates. Airfare from New York is included.
Airline fuel surcharges and taxes, ticketing fees and tips are additional.
Now here's a D'Elia's Deal you don't want to miss. Pay for your Antarctic voyage with interest free installments through Hurtigruten's Layaway Getaway Plan by visiting www.hurtigruten.us.
