Whether you're looking for a concert, performance art, or just a beer, the Brooklyn cultural institution Galapagos Art Space has it all in its new DUMBO location.

"In a week in Galapagos, you could watch theater, dance, arts, performance, see a band, a wedding on the weekend. You could have puppets doing a puppetry festival," says Galapagos founder and director Robert Elms.

Elms was a sculptor when he first opened the original venue in Williamsburg, Brooklyn in the mid 1990s. Rising rents recently brought the avant-garde performance space to DUMBO's Main Street.

Zagat says not only is the reincarnation double its previous size, but the eclectic bill of acts has got nothing on the dramatic space.

Patrons praise the stage, that faces rows of half moon-shaped banquettes suspended over a floor of water.

"We have a 16,000-square-foot lake and our dream is magnetic fishing," says Elms.

Elms is passionate about Galapagos' place as an institution embedded in both his neighborhood and the city's wider culture. Galapagos recently started the DUMBO Kite Flying Society for local children to help give back to the surrounding community.

"It's very important to understand and feel pride in what you're doing, and Galapagos for me is really about a contribution," says Elms. "Allowing young work to mature, it's about taking mid-career work and setting it free and help it grow."

Even more, Galapagos is environmentally-conscious. Elms says in a few months, it will be completed as New York's first Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design-certified cultural institution. The materials include 30-percent recycled concrete, 100-percent recycled steel and sustainably-harvested wood.

As a commercial space, Galapagos does not accept government grants or public money. Elms says as long as Galapagos are providing strong communicative and effective work, the audience will come.

Galapagos is not yet rated in the Zagat guide but prices are listed as Moderate.
