You can travel to exotic Southeast Asia without leaving New York. The new Zagat 2009 restaurant guide highlights some should not be missed.

Bun
143 Grand Street
1-212-431-7999
www.eatbun.com

The guide calls this late-night SoHo Vietnamese dining spot "innovative" with "flavorful" namesake staples like rice vermicelli that appears in many forms on the menu. Fans praise "high-concept creations" at "great prices." While some call the service "clunky," most just rave about the "modern," stylishly spare décor.

Bun gets a 21 out of 30 for food, a 17 for décor and an 18 for service. The average cost of dinner here is $31.

Tet
83 Avenue A
1-212-253-0800

Zagat says the former owner of Omai and Nam has subtly updated classic Vietnamese dishes in this East Village spot. The guide adds you can sample offerings in small portions intended for sharing, like coconut rice crepes, although there are plenty of entrees too. Surveyors describe the simple modern digs as comfortable but add here the excitement is on the plate.

Tet is not yet rated but prices are listed as inexpensive.
