The New York City Department of Health says women are living longer than ever – and much longer than men.

Figures released yesterday show a woman born in 2006 can expect to live an average of 81.7 years; that's up five months from just the year before.

The life expectancy for men went up 2.5 months to 75.9 years.

Health Commissioner Thomas Frieden say the reason women live longer is that men smoke more, drink more, and get shot more than women.
