Forget about hearing your favorite jukebox tunes on the Great White Way -- Off-Broadway is currently serving comfort food for fans who are looking to rediscover the songs of their lives. NY1's Stephanie Simon filed the following report.

Set against the backdrop of Springfield High's prom in 1958, the musical revue "The Marvelous Wonderettes" explores the hopes and dreams of four young girls told through Doo-wop and Motown hits of the 50's and 60's.

The show, which originated at the Milwaukee Repertory Theater more than nine years ago comes to New York after a run in California. Bets Malone, who plays Suzy, has been with the production since the very beginning.

"Roger Bean wrote the show with four girls that he knew in mind and I'm the last one standing. And when we started it was a 45-minute skit and it just grew into this really wonderful, you know, Hallmark of a show. It's changed a lot. Music rights have affected it a lot. We've lost some songs and every time we've lost a song, a song that has replaced it, has been better for the piece and moved us along towards this ultimate goal wonderfully," said Malone.

"Rock of Ages" is another jukebox musical currently on the boards Off-Broadway where Motown gives way to metal in an homage to 80's rock.

In the show , the music of Bon Jovi, Journey and Pat Benatar all help set the scene for the Bourbon rock club, which is about to be demolished. American Idol's Constantine Maroulis plays the young aspiring rock star/bar back in the club who is chasing after the new girl in town played by Kelli Barrett.

"I get to sing some of the songs that I grew up worshipping. Everything from White Snake, you know, lots of high notes. And what else do I get to sing? Journey, lots of Journey. And you know my voice happens to sit up there so it's just an honor to be able to sing Steve Perry every night and all these great artists. You know, people come down of all ages to check out our show and they really sort of get invested right from beginning," said Maroulis.

Barrett, who plays Sherrie in the piece, said the tunes of the 80's go hand-in-hand with musical theatre.

"What's great about 80's rock in particular is that it's just not afraid to go there. To just be crazy and so we were like, of course this would be a great theater piece. The wigs and the costumes and the lights and let's make it a concert with heart and this great plot written by Chris D'Arienzo that fits in really nicely with all of the songs," said Barrett.

You too can go down that often traveled road with "Rock of Ages" currently playing at New World Stages or take a trip back
with "The Marvelous Wonderettes" at the Westside Theatre.
