To find out what the jazz scene is like in New York, NY1's Stephanie Simon set out to experience 24-straight hours of jazz in the city.

Along the way, she met some young musicians and lots of jazz luminaries.

More than half way through the journey, jazz icon Wynton Marsalis played some wake up music for her and explained how pulling an all-nighter is what jazz is all about.

"It's good that you stayed up, because that's the real truth of it," said Marsalis. "You know, Wes Anderson and I used to hang out at jam sessions all night until 4 or 5 in the morning. We'd always say, 'anybody can get up and hang at 5, but who can get up at 7 or 8 all the time?' The key to being a real hanger is you got to stay up all night, but you got to get up early. "

Viewers can follow Stephanie's entire 24-hour journey on "Jazz Lives Here", tomorrow and Sunday at 6 p.m. and 9 p.m.
