The Health Department is stamping some graphic images on matchbooks, in an effort to encourage smokers kick the habit.
Health officials unveiled the new line of matchbooks today, featuring images of diseased lungs, rotting gums, and tumors.
Officials say the effects of smoking are not pretty – and could have deadly consequences.
The matchbooks are part of the Health Department's "Eating You Alive" campaign, and will be distributed at cigarette retailers in parts of the Bronx, Brooklyn, and Harlem.
While many countries put these images right on the cigarette pack, a labeling law enacted in 1984 limits New York to only a small text box on the side of cigarette packs and advertisements
