A new exhibit at the Museum of the City of New York in East Harlem looks at 150 years of London street photography. But what is it doing here? Museum Director Susan Henshaw Jones says we're sister cities with much in common.

"London and New York share an abundant street life. New Yorkers are always out on the streets. We walk to work, we walk home and here in New York City we talk to each other and I don't know if that's the case in London," Henshaw says.

Not to be outdone, there is a companion exhibition on New York street photography. Curator Sean Corcoran says these side by side shows create a unique dialogue.

"New York is a much younger city so we have a lot of tall buildings, skyscrapers and there's a grid system so there is a lot of collision of people on the street corners, whereas London is a an older, lower city. So the architecture is much different and people meet in a more meandering way," explains Corcoran.

Most of the New York photos were taken by well known photographers. Anonymous photographers snapped most of the London images, which gave Henshaw a great idea.

"We thought that we would like to do an open call, a Stephanie Simon, NY1 open call for photographs just taken by regular New Yorkers, average New Yorkers and visitors to the city as well and then pull together an exhibition," Henshaw says.
