For the first time since the H1N1 flu outbreak, medical institutions across the country are ready to begin testing vaccines for the virus.
Government-affiliated scientists will hold a series of clinical trials to gather information about possible vaccines.
The vaccine may be given to thousands of adult volunteers as early as next month. Trials on children will follow if all goes well.
Researchers will review their health to develop an effective procedure.
They will try to determine how much of the H1N1 vaccine is needed.
On Wednesday, the National Institutes of Health tapped a network of medical facilities across the country to begin a series of studies. The University of Maryland is the closest research site to New York City.
The unique virus is expected to make a comeback in the fall.
