The Department of Transportation said Friday that a mechanical failure caused this week's hard landing at the Staten Island Ferry terminal at St. George.

It appears a transformer failed, shutting down the power to one of the motors that drives the propeller, causing other motors to shut down.

They say the ferryboat John J. Marchi Ferry lost power as it was pulling into the terminal and crashed into the pier during Wednesday's evening rush.

Fifteen people were treated for minor injuries.

In 2003 the ferry Andrew J. Barberi crashed going full-speed into the same terminal, killing 11 people.
