As planned, big traffic changes are coming to Broadway.

Starting Sunday, drivers will not be allowed on Broadway between 33rd and 35th Streets and from 42nd to 47th Streets.

Traffic will be routed to Seventh Avenue as the city starts construction on huge pedestrian plazas in Times Square and Herald Square.

It's hoped the expanded Broadway will ease chronic traffic bottle-necking in the area while creating a safer place for walkers and bike riders.

"We expect that even during this construction season Broadway will become even more of an attraction and a retail hot spot. It's going to spark the kind of economic activity that we want to see in this area," said Transportation Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan.

During construction, the city has several activities planned for the area, including broadcasting the Tony Awards to a live audience on June 7.

The city estimates construction will be done by mid-August.
