More and more New Yorkers are taking public transportation.
According to the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, city subways and buses provided almost 2.4 billion rides in 2008, marking a three-percent jump in ridership and the MTA's biggest year since 1965.
The end of the year did see some decline due to the struggling economy.
Straphangers told NY1 they were not surprised by the increase.
"I don't even know how to drive, so the subway is pretty much my only option," said one rider.
"It's the best subway system in the world, and we need it. We just have to get to like each other a little more. We have no choice," said another.
The MTA cites high gas prices and strong economic activity during the first half of the year, and increased tourism and residential development as reasons for the spike in ridership.
