A federal commission wants to increase gas taxes, now that gas prices have fallen nationwide.

Appointed by Congress, the commission is recommending a 50 percent fuel tax hike nationwide and adds that states should also consider increasing state fuel taxes.

They say the money is needed to go toward infrastructure improvements such as highway repairs, bridge construction and transit programs.

Officials say since people are driving less and buying more fuel-efficient cars, the revenue currently collected from gas and diesel taxes is coming up short.

The proposed increase would mean an increase of 10 cents more for a gallon for gas and about 12 to 15 cents more per gallon of diesel.

The commission is expected to officially present their report to Congress later this month.
