Authorities are offering a $36,000 reward after a city bus driver was stabbed to death while on the job in Brooklyn Monday afternoon.

Police say 46-year-old Edwin Thomas died after receiving stab wounds to the neck and chest.

Thomas was operating a bus on the B46 line along Gates Avenue and Malcolm X Boulevard in Bedford-Stuyvesant. Witnesses say a man got on the bus and asked for a transfer.

When the Thomas told him he was not eligible, police say the suspect stabbed him twice: once in the stomach and once in the chest.

Thomas was taken to Woodhull Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

"Our men and women are dealing with the public everyday. I think this is a situation that we can only describe at this point as random," said MTA Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer Elliot "Lee" Sander. "I'm not sure that anything more could have been done. "

Thomas was a seven-year veteran of the MTA. He worked out of the Flatbush depot, where co-workers say he'll be sorely missed.

"Mr. Thomas was a faithful employee," said co-worker Louretha Carter. "He was never out sick. He was quiet. He picked up his work. You never heard anything out of him. "

In the Brooklyn neighborhood where Thomas, a husband and father of two, lived, neighbors say they'd often see him coming and going in his prized black BMW.

"He's a pretty young guy and very nice person," said neighbor Annette Jacques.

"That could happen to anyone in your family," said another. "You never know and imagine somebody, your husband, your father goes to work one day. And you hear that news; it very shocking."

Police are looking for the suspect, and are offering a $36,000 reward for any information leading to his arrest and conviction.

Anyone with information is being asked to call the Crime Stoppers hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS or send a text to CRIMES and enter TIP577.
