Straphangers who find their commute slowed by train congestion and other delays may not know that they can actually receive written proof of their ordeal.

New York City Transit says each year they hand out more than 34,000 notes verifying transit delays. That way, students and workers can have proof to give their teachers and bosses.

Riders can request the letters over the phone, and transit workers will mail out official notes indicating the train line, length of trip and delays.

Officials say they are working on an internet-based system to speed up the process.
