Commuters at Grand Central Station are being treated to live jazz this week, with a different group performing each day.

The shows are part of the Jazz Fest presented by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority's Music Under New York program.

"We present musical performances, about 125 musical performances every week at 25 different spots and locations around the city," explained Amy Hausmann, assistant director of Arts for Transit. "Arts for Transit also administers a visual arts program. Our goal really is to enliven and enhance the experience for the commuters as they move through the system."

"Sometimes it's noisy, but ultimately there are so many people down here and we generate some big crowds," said performer Jesse Selengut of the group Tin Pan. "A lot of people see us. And it's fun."

It seemed even the busiest commuters stopped to listen and enjoy the music today.

"Oh I love the whole idea of having music in the train station," said one passer-by. "It makes the ride to work a little bit easier."

"To me, they're professionals," said another. "They really play the music the way it's supposed to be. I love music; I love all types of music."

"I was rushing, but I decided to stop and listen; it's great," said a third. "So I'll stay a little while longer before I have to go to work."

The music can be heard today from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. and the rest of the week at various times between noon and 8 p.m.
