Mayor Michael Bloomberg's budget director is talking up an old idea to help the city close its budget gap.
During a City Council finance hearing Monday, Mark Page said that he and the mayor are eager to bring up a commuter tax with lawmakers in Albany.
Republican state lawmakers recently said they oppose any attempt to revive the tax, but a newly Democratic-controlled Senate might give new life to the tax.
For 33 years, the city collected $360 million a year from commuters who live outside New York City. The tax was eliminated in 1999.
Just last spring the state Legislature defeated Bloomberg's "congesting pricing" proposal, which was in effect a commuter tax.
