The number of subway delays continues to skyrocket, even as the Metropolitan Transportation Authority considers a fare increase and service cuts for next year.
According to New York City Transit's latest statistics released Thursday, there were more than 18,000 delayed trains in the month of September – a 96-percent increase from September 2007.
Meanwhile, the MTA is moving forward with plans to install more raised sidewalk grates to prevent rainwater from flooding the subway system.
A prototype was installed in September, and next week the MTA board is expected to approve a contract to install 700 more at locations throughout Queens.
Transit officials will put off painting subway stations in order to fund the $19 million project, which the agency hopes to complete next March, in time for the spring rainy season.
