The MTA installed a new piece of sidewalk furniture in Downtown Manhattan Wednesday.

Benches and bike racks were placed on top of grates to prevent the subways from flooding during heavy storms.

This is the second prototype the MTA has unveiled in recent weeks. The first was in Hillside, Queens.

The agency said 15 more are expected to be built along West Broadway in flood-prone areas.

The move came after a storm virtually shut down the transit system in August 2007.
