The city's Department of Transportation Tuesday announced 10 finalists in its CityRacks Design Competition.

The winning design will become the new standard for city sidewalk bicycle parking racks – replacing the current ones which are more than 10 years old.

The goal is to develop racks that are functional and attractive, even artistic.

The city hopes to double bike commuting by 2015 by expanding parking and making bicycling seem more convenient and attractive.

"We're doing everything we can to improve the balance on the streets of New York," said DOT Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan. "One of the big things that we're working on is a public education campaign. We'll spend about a million and a half dollars over the next year to educate people to respect each other's rights on the road."

"I lock my bicycle on any pole that I can see if they are available, because I see a lot of people riding bikes now to exercise and make clean this place, too," said a cyclist.

Prototypes of the designs, which were selected from over 200 applicants worldwide, are on display at Astor Place in Manhattan and other locations around the city, including Fordham Plaza in the Bronx and Borough Hall in Queens.

The winner will be announced on October 24th.
