Senator Hillary Clinton joined mass transit advocates Friday to demand federal funding to help lower subway and bus fares.
Clinton greeted workers at Grand Central Terminal where she outlined her plan to get federal funding for mass transit systems in New York City and across the country.
She said the MTA is suffering under the weight of rising fuel costs at a time when more and more people are relying on public transportation to get to work.
"It is unacceptable that the commuters who are doing so much to help all of us would be burdened with further fare hikes and service cuts,” said Clinton. “It's time we kept the public interest in mind by investing in public transit and that's what I am proposing."
Senator Clinton's bill would authorize nearly $2 billion over two years to enable mass transit systems to lower fares and expand operations.
New York City's mass transit would receive $237 million.
