The Metropolitan Transportation Authority is replacing wooden benches throughout the subway system with new stainless steel models.
The sleeker, modern style seating is also easier and less costly to maintain, according to the authority.
The new benches are already in place at the R station at Whitehall Street in Downtown Manhattan.
MTA officials said they do not have the cash to replace all of the benches at once -- so they'll be phased in gradually
