Overnight service suspensions are coming to the Seventh Avenue subway lines this week as the Metropolitan Transportation Authority makes improvements under its Fastrack maintenance program.
The closures began Monday and will run four consecutive nights from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. as crews repair tracks and switches, replace rail components and perform power and signal maintenance work.
There will be no service between 34th Street-Penn Station and South Ferry on the 1 train, no service between 34th Street and Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn on the 2 train, and no service at all on the 3.
Number 5 trains will make all 2 train stops from Atlantic Avenue to Flatbush Avenue, and 4 trains will make all 3 train stops from Atlantic to New Lots Avenue.
The MTA says the maintenance work will get done faster because there are no trains running.
"I think that's the way to do it: get the pain over with," said one straphanger.
"Always seems like there's waste. I don't know. Whatever they can do to save money, I guess, they keep the fares down," said another straphanger.
"I think it causes a lot of chaos, a lot more time invested with people. It's harder traveling," said a third.
The MTA says the repair program will save the agency between $10 million and $15 million a year.
Fastrack improvements will be coming to the B, D, F and M lines later this month and the A, C and E after that.
