The new chief of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority said Friday that some city subway stations are in need of expansion.
Joe Lhota said the agency will need to dig into its pockets to upgrade some of the system's more narrow platforms as it tries to keep up with a surge in ridership.
Speaking before a budget hearing, he used the "L" line as an example of an overcrowded route in need of change.
According to the MTA, "L" train ridership is up more than 90 percent on the weekdays since 1998 and 140 percent on the weekend.
An agency spokesman said the current capital plan doesn't call for expanding any stations.
