The Metropolitan Transportation Authority says its new rail repair program could be a model for future maintenance work.

The first phase of the MTA's Fastrack program involved shutting down overnight service on large portions of the 4, 5 and 6 lines in Manhattan and Brooklyn for four days of intense repair work.

The agency says cramming the work into a short period of time saved about $600,000.

However, although the program proved to be efficient, officials cautioned it still needs more testing.

"We set out the week with 324 separate tasks that we wanted to accomplish and at the end of the day, we got each and every one of them complete," said MTA New York City Transit President Thomas Prendergast.

"We need to actually have three or four more experiences before we can ascertain how successful it is and how we can improve upon it and what the impacts are," said Carmen Bianco, the head of the MTA Department of Subways.

The next Fastrack project is slated to begin the night of February 13 on the 1, 2 and 3 lines.
