Ahead of next week's Metropolitan Transportation Authority board meeting, community leaders in Queens and transit union officials are once again urging the agency not to lay off station agents.

Assemblyman David Weprin, along with representatives of Transit Workers Union and officials from the Amalgamated Transit Union, protested outside the only subway station in Weprin's Jamaica Estates district.

He says eliminating station agents is dangerous.

"You see advertisements all over the radio, the TV, all over the media. 'If you see something, say something.' How can you say something if there's no one there to say something?" said Weprin.

"We are keeping New York safe for many years. We do our job, we should be on the job," said station agent Rushdi Huq.

Weprin says there is federal stimulus money available that could help prevent the cuts.

The MTA is expected to vote in favor of the layoffs at Wednesday's meeting.

Board members will also talk about a proposed 7.5-percent fare hike.
