Mayor Michael Bloomberg nominated former City Councilman David Yassky to be the next chairman of the Taxi and Limousine Commission on Friday.
Bloomberg made the announcement on his weekly radio show.
If approved by the City Council, Yassky will be appointed to a seven-year term.
"Yassky's the right guy, I think, because if you remember, he led the way in introducing hybrid taxis to the city that was part of PlaNYC," said the mayor. "He was chairman of the small business committee, so he's familiar with the issues and concerns of running a small business, and a lot of taxi drivers are small businesses."
Yassky, who made an unsuccessful run last year for city comptroller, would replace outgoing Commissioner Matthew Daus, who announced last month that he was ending his eight-year tenure.
