Fares on the city's subways and buses won't increase next year, according to Metropolitan Transportation Authority head Jay Walder.

Walder told reporters that despite the MTA's operating budget being stripped of $140 million in a bare-bones state spending plan passed Wednesday, the agency is still postponing fare increases.

The cuts were $30 million more than originally anticipated.

Walder says the agency will have to operate more efficiently.

Bus and subway fares are expected to rise 7.5 percent in 2011 and 2013, but the recent cuts could lead to a sharper rise in fares.
