More city bus drivers are being punished for talking and texting on cell phones behind the wheel.

New York City Transit officials tell NY1 they have either reprimanded, suspended or fired 170 drivers through September, an increase of nearly 60 percent from last year.

The jump is being attributed to increased enforcement, based on random check and investigations of rider complaints.

It was reported yesterday that a driver who struck and killed a pedestrian in Manhattan last week had been previously suspended for cell phone use.

It is unclear if cell phone use had anything to do with that accident.
