The Metropolitan Transportation Authority is planning to outfit a subway train with surveillance cameras by the end of this year.
The agency says that by the last quarter of this year, the MTA will run one train with security cameras in every car.
The MTA says the system will not be watched live, but will keep a digital recording that could help after a crime or emergency.
There's no word yet on what the pilot program will cost or what specific line will be chosen for it. But, the MTA says the system will be installed on one of the newer, lettered subway cars because they're already wired for surveillance cameras.
If successful, the program could be expanded to every subway train.
