The target completion date for the first phase of the Second Avenue subway line project has been pushed back to the end of 2016, with any further delays pushing it to the following summer.
The news comes after the MTA's completion of an analysis of the work schedule, budget and other potential problems.
With overcrowding an ever-increasing problem in the subway, riders NY1 spoke with say they're annoyed, but resigned to the fact that there is no choice but to wait.
"These are the things that happen sometimes, sometimes construction takes a little bit longer than you want, but ultimately it will be here and people will be happy when it does come," said one New Yorker.
"I really think it's terrible, first of all I'm on Second Avenue and 74th Street so all the construction is happening near me and I work on 93rd Street and all the construction is happening and the way they divert traffic is absolutely terrible," said another New Yorker.
The analysis also determined the extension of the Long Island Rail Road to Grand Central Terminal will now be slated to be ready in September of 2016, a year and a half later than had been hoped for.
In a statement, the MTA says it is committed to completing both projects, and revised costs will be accounted for in the upcoming 2010-2014 Capital Program.
