Sources tell NY1 Governor David Paterson will nominate Transit Executive Jay Walder as the new MTA chairman Tuesday.
Walder has worked for the agency for more than 10 years, working his way up to executive director before going to work for London's system.
The State Senate would have to approve the appointment.
Helena Williams is currently the MTA's interim director.
Paterson asked the Long Island Rail Road President to take the reins after Elliot Sander resigned in May.
Sander was pushed out of the job after lawmakers finally agreed on an MTA bailout to help close the agency's massive budget gap and stave off huge fare hikes.
