The Metropolitan Transportation Authority said some new hybrid buses will be on city roads by August.
The EcoSaver 4, seen above, is touted as being quieter and is said to have fewer emissions that regular buses.
Currently the agency is rolling out eight hybrids, but it has the option to order as many as 80.
The bus has an electric motor powered by a battery pack that's charged by a turbine engine.
One transit executive calls the new model "the smiley bus," since it curvy blue area below the front windshield resembles a smile.
