Straphangers will now have to shell out a little more money to ride the city's subways and buses.

The MTA's much publicized fare hike took effect at midnight, raising the base subway and bus fare to $2.25.

The following is a list of the new rates for various MetroCard amounts:

• 30-day unlimited ride MetroCards - $89 (up from $81)
• 14-day - $51.50
• 7-day - $27
• 1-day pass - $8.25

Unlimited MetroCards may still be good for several more weeks. The MTA says any one day passes bought before Sunday, June 28th will be good through July 6th. Weekly unlimited passes will be valid through July 12th and two week passes will be good through July 19th.

Thirty-day cards will be good through August 4th. All of those cards must be activated by July 6th.

"Its going to impact all of us. They 25 cents adds up everyday. Two rides a day is 50 cents. So it just adds up and all of that is just less money for us," said one city resident.

"It could have been worse. I can deal with the extra $8. You just rearrange your budget and take the $8 from somewhere else," said another city resident.

Toll increases on the agency's bridges and tunnels will kick in July 12th.
