Housing Authority Chairman To Step Down

Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced today that the head of the city's Housing Authority is stepping down.

Tino Hernandez is returning to the private sector after seven years as NYCHA's chairman.

NYCHA has come under fire recently for multiple problems with elevator maintenance in many buildings.

One of those problems lead to the death of a five-year-old boy in Williamsburg, Brooklyn in August.

Today, Bloomberg said the agency made great strides under Hernandez.

"We've made it an awful lot better for the people that live there," said the mayor. "We've brought crime down dramatically. We've also raised rents for those in NYCHA housing who can afford it, who are making more money. That's only fair to everybody, because somebody's got to pay. And Tino really has made a big difference."

Critics also note that the agency has been in financial trouble during Hernandez's tenure.
